A customer's card expires before their next Stripe renewal. What happens, and what to do
A customer pays $490 a year. Their card on file says 03/27, and their renewal is in June 2027. If nothing changes, that renewal is declined with expired_card, and Stripe's retries cannot fix a card that no longer exists. Whether nothing changes depends on three things Stripe does for you and one it does not.
1. Automatic card updates catch a lot, quietly
Stripe works with the card networks to refresh saved card details when a bank issues a replacement card, for example a new expiry date or a new number after a card is lost. When it works, the new expiry simply appears on the payment method and the renewal goes through. You can see it happen: Stripe sends a payment_method.automatically_updated event. The catch is coverage. It only works when the customer's bank takes part in the network program, coverage is strongest in the US and thinner elsewhere, and there is no way to tell in advance which cards will update. A customer who switched banks, or whose account was closed, will not be updated.
2. The expiring card email, one month ahead
In your revenue recovery email settings you can turn on Send emails about expiring cards. Stripe then emails the customer one month before the default card on file expires, with a link to update it. It is free and worth turning on. Two limits: it is one email, and it goes to the email on the Stripe customer record, which for a B2B customer is often a shared inbox or someone who has left. One month is also measured from the card's expiry, not your renewal date.
3. Renewal reminders and failed payment emails
Send emails about upcoming renewals warns customers before an automatic charge, and Send emails when card payments fail tells them after a failed attempt, each with a link to update the card. Both help. The failed payment email arrives after the fact, though, and by then the subscription may already be past due.
4. Why retries don't save an expired card
Smart Retries are good at soft declines: insufficient funds, a temporary block, a bank that was down. An expired card is a hard decline. Retrying the same card on day three and day seven fails the same way unless the customer or the card updater changes it in between. So the fix for an expiring card has to happen before the renewal, not after.
5. The customers who fall through
Put the pieces together and the gap is clear: a card whose bank does not take part in automatic updates, belonging to a customer who did not open Stripe's single email. Annual plans are the costly case. The card can expire nine months before the renewal, Stripe's email goes out a month before that expiry, and by renewal day nobody remembers it. On a monthly plan you lose $49; on an annual plan you lose $490 in one decline.
6. How to find them yourself
For each active subscription, compare the default card's expiry month with the next renewal date. Any card that expires before the renewal is at risk. Then remove the ones where Stripe has already refreshed the card: an expiry that moved forward since last month means the updater got there. What is left is a short list. A personal note from the founder, two to four weeks before the renewal, gets far more replies than a system email, because it comes from a person the customer knows.
Catch them every morning
Conciliq refreshes the card on file for every live subscription each day and lists the customers whose card expires before their next renewal, with the amount at risk, alongside failed payments Stripe's retries did not recover. It drafts a short note you send from your own email. We can see your data, never touch it.

- Does Stripe automatically update expired cards?
- Often, through the card networks' updater programs, but only when the customer's bank takes part. Coverage varies by country and you cannot tell in advance which cards will update, so some renewals still fail.
- When does Stripe send the expiring card email?
- One month before the default card on file expires, if Send emails about expiring cards is turned on in your revenue recovery email settings. It is a single email.
- Will Smart Retries recover a renewal that failed because the card expired?
- Usually not on their own. An expired card is a hard decline, so retries fail until the customer adds a new card or the card updater refreshes it.
